SoCal Jewish nonprofits gather for ‘Holocaust Remembrance Film Series’
The Holocaust Museum LA, the Wende Museum in Culver City and JQ International will present a virtual summer series about Holocaust films made in Germany.
The series is sponsored by the German Consulate and presented by journalist Tom Teicholz and the Teicholz Holocaust Remembrance Film Series (named after Teicholz’s parents, who were Holocaust survivors), and includes panel discussions with film critics, educators and historians. Previous themes have been Hollywood and the Holocaust, resistance during the Holocaust, and the Holocaust in France and Italy.
The series, which will be presented virtually for the second year because of the pandemic, comprises three films beginning with “Jacob the Liar” (1974) on July 29, “Aimée & Jaguar” (1999) on Aug. 5 and “Naked Among Wolves” (1963) on Aug. 12. However, the films also will be accessible for a few days before and after the screening dates.
“This is the only series of films about the Holocaust in Los Angeles, the world capital of moviemaking,” Teicholz said. “In Southern California, where we appreciate the power of film, and particularly at a time when antisemitism is on the rise, it is important to raise people’s consciousness by remembering the Holocaust as rendered in these films.”
The panels, moderated by Teicholz, will feature Holli Levitsky, director of the Jewish Studies program and professor of English at Loyola Marymount University; Marina Ivanova, associate professor of German film and media and academic director of the DEFA Film Library; writer and director Jon Kean (“Swimming in Auschwitz,” 2006); Los Angeles writer and director Jeremy Borison (“Boxes,” 2019); and representatives from Holocaust Museum LA and JQ International.
While the screenings and panels are free, a donation of $10 is encouraged. Register for the event here.
