Rep. Alan Lowenthal announces retirement, will not seek reelection in 2022
Rep. Alan Lowenthal (D-Long Beach), who was first elected to Congress in 2012 and served on the House Transportation and Infrastructure, and Natural Resources committees, announced on Dec. 16 that he will not seek reelection in 2022 and plans to retire at the end of his term in January 2023.
Lowenthal, 80, joins 23 House Democrats so far who have indicated they will not seek reelection; 13 House Republicans also have said they won’t run.
A native of Queens, N.Y., and a staunch supporter of Israel, Lowenthal’s political career started in 1992, when he served as a Long Beach City Councilmember. In the 1998 election to represent the 54th district of the California State Assembly, he defeated Republican nominee Julie Alban. He was reelected in 2000 and 2002.
In 2004, he ran for the California Senate from the 27th Senate district and won. He was reelected in 2008.
Lowenthal is married and has two sons and four grandchildren. “After a decade in the House, Congressman Lowenthal’s passion and intellect will be deeply missed by our Caucus and the Congress,” House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-San Francisco) said in a statement.
