Local Jewish nonprofits receive CalOES funds to enhance security and safety
The California Governor’s Office of Emergency Services (Cal OES) on Jan. 25 awarded $47.5 million to 290 community nonprofits across the state, including Jewish organizations, community centers and synagogues in Southern California.
Funds are awarded through a competitive grant process. Organizations, particularly those targeted on the basis of race, religious affiliation, gender identity, sexual orientation, disability, immigration status or similar criteria were eligible to apply.
The grants are to provide upgrades to physical security enhancements including but not limited to reinforced doors, gates, shatter-proof glass and window film, and security personnel and access to control systems.
Holocaust Museum LA and de Toledo High School in Los Angeles and Temple Adat Shalom in Poway (San Diego County), are among the recipients.
Cal OES Director and Governor’s Homeland Security Advisor Mark Ghilarducci said in a statement, “No Californian should have to fear for their safety when going to a house of worship, community center or reproductive health clinic. These strategic investments are an important part of the broader effort to improve intelligence gathering, harden infrastructure and protect our communities from threats of violent extremism.”
