Joshua Malina and Joan Nathan bake to celebrate MAZON’s 36th birthday
To celebrate its 36th birthday, MAZON: A Jewish Response to Hunger, hosted a virtual fundraising event on June 8. Actor Joshua Malina (“The West Wing,” “Scandal”), together with Jewish food expert and New York Times contributing food columnist Joan Nathan, baked Nathan’s Roman ricotta cheese crostata cake with cherries and chocolate.
The event drew more than 100 households and raised almost $200,000.
Together with his daughter, Isabel in their Mar Vista home, Malina baked the Italian Jewish cheesecake, while Nathan baked from her home in Washington D.C. The pair discussed Jewish delis, (Malina enjoys Pico Kosher Deli), the Jewish food history of Sicily and how to address the hunger crisis that currently affects one in four people in the United States.
According to MAZON, the hunger crisis in the U.S. has doubled since the beginning of COVID-19, pushing the number of people experiencing food insecurity to more than 80 million. Since its inception, MAZON has distributed $76,894,131 to help people around the U.S. struggling with hunger, and $14,134,464 to 157 California-based organizations.
